Open letter - Safe trains for major sport events

Wales qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 is a huge achievement for this country.

Between World Cup group games, Euro Group games, the Nation’s league group games and friendlies, Wales is seeing an increased number of international football matches in Cardiff.

We have been lucky to be witnessing a golden age in Welsh football, but if you rely on the train to travel from north Wales then unfortunately packed trains have been putting a dampener on the spirits of our sports fans.

For years now, when there has been a big event in Cardiff put TfW and its predecessor Arriva Trains Wales have not increased their capacity.

This means that when the rail network is at its busiest there are only two carriages from Holyhead all the way to our capital.

Anyone who has been forced to travel on one of these overcrowded trains will know that this situation can rob special occasions of their joy.

This is not rocket science, nearly all these events are scheduled months in advance so if TfW and the Welsh Government are doing their jobs they should know they are happening and can react appropriately.

That’s why we are calling on the Welsh Government to provide the necessary support for Transport for Wales to provide safe and proper capacity on trains traveling at busy times such as sporting internationals in Cardiff.

We demand more carriages on our trains when there are big events on in Cardiff.
