Animal Welfare

Animal Welfare

As a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Animal Welfare and an animal enthusiast myself, I can assure you that I and my Plaid Cymru colleagues remain committed to animal welfare issues and believes Wales can lead the way in the protection of animals.

I warmly welcomed the introduction of the Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats and Ferrets) Bill. My Plaid Cymru colleagues and I support this Bill and continue to urge the UK Government to act quickly to ensure the Bill does not suffer the same fate as the fallen Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill.

Plaid Cymru are also committed to taking the following steps to make tangible changes to the welfare of animals in Wales:

· Supporting tougher sentences for those who abuse animals.

· Creating an Animal Abuse Register for Wales.

· Introducing new legislation to regulate the sale of pet animals online.

· Implementing the recommendations of the Westminster Parliament’s Environment, Food and Rural Affair Select Committee on ending Breed Specific Legislation.

· Introducing an online harms regulator with the power to require social media providers to ensure that animal cruelty content is not shared on their platforms.

· Strengthening legislation against illegal puppy imports.

· Ending the import and sale of fur.

· End the giving of pets as prizes.
