Open letter to Barclays Bank: Retain banking services in Porthmadog

Add your name to this open letter to Barclays Bank:

We the undersigned are disappointed with Barclays’ recent announcement to close the local bank branch in Porthmadog, Gwynedd.

We don’t agree with Barclays’ advice that all customers should move to online banking because not everybody has access to a reliable internet connection, particularly in rural areas like parts of Dwyfor Meirionnydd where reliable digital connectivity is a problem. Many older people are also reluctant to use the internet for any financial matters.

As our communities recover from the effects of COVID, face-to-face services should be retained in order to support vulnerable people in vulnerable communities. Brining banking services to an end in Porthmadog will have an adverse and far-reaching impact on charities and community groups in the area who often rely on cash.

According to the Financial Conduct Authority, people in Wales are most likely to have to travel large distances to get to a bank branch: 7.5% of residents face journeys of more than 16km.

We call on Barclays Bank to support local residents and businesses in Porthmadog by retaining banking services in the town. We sincerely hope Barclays will reconsider this devastating blow to Porthmadog.

Yours sincerely,

I have banked with Barclays for over 55 years but loyalty counts for nothing given your proposal to close two key branches in Porthmadog and Caernarfon serving a rural community where on-line banking can never satisfactorily replace a branch. Shame on you Barclays – this customer will be moving elsewhere

What’s needed is a bank owned by the people of Wales and the Welsh Government, which would open branches in all the small towns which have been deserted by the big banks, offering the services needed by the businesses and people of those areas.

Many businesses in town rely on bank to pay in daily in the evening. Decision by Barclays doesn’t make sense. Elderly people. People without Internet. Vulnerable. People contact matters after covid, power cuts, rural areas. Start to be a kind bank instead of saving Money, compassion to staff and customers would be a start.

If all banks insisted on their customers banking on line where is the access to cash. Some people who provide local services prefer to be paid cash. Also there are times when customers feel more comfortable talking to a human face to face e.g. in times of financial difficulty.
