A petition calling on the Post Office to safeguard face-to-face, over-the-counter services in Caernarfon has been presented to senior figures from the organisation during a high-level meeting in Westminster.
The petition with 1,633 signatures was handed to Post Office Chairman Nigel Railton by Dwyfor Meirionnydd Member of Parliament, Liz Saville Roberts. It calls on the Post Office to re-think plans to close the Crown Post Office in the town.
The petition was set up by local Plaid Cymru community representatives including Liz Saville Roberts MP, Siân Gwenllian MS, Councillor Cai Larsen, and North Wales MS Llyr Gruffydd.
Plans to close the Caernarfon Crown Post Office has been met with fierce criticism from the local community.
Commenting, Liz Saville Roberts MP said:
First and foremost, I would like to thank everyone who has added their voice to the campaign calling on the Post Office to safeguard face-to-face services in Caernarfon. It is blatantly clear that local people want to see over-the-counter services maintained in the town. People place immense value on the convenience of being able to pop into their local Post Office branch, whether for their personal or business needs. With the loss of high street banking, the Post Office in Caernarfon remains one of the few accessible places for local banking services. The Post Office is first and foremost a public service, yet there seems to have been little in the way of public engagement or strategic planning where branches need to be guaranteed. I present this petition in the hope that our collective pressure on the Post Office leads to a positive, long-term outcome for the local community – one which puts the needs of local Post Office customers first.
Siân Gwenllian MS added:
The closure of Caernarfon’s Post Office is a serious blow to the community, and the strength of feeling among residents is clear. This petition demonstrates the deep concern about the loss of such a vital service, and I urge Post Office Ltd to listen to the voices of those who rely on it every day. I will continue to press for a sustainable solution that ensures Caernarfon has the services it needs and deserves.
