Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has called on Gwynedd Council to bring forward a robust long-term plan to repair and strengthen sea defences in Tywyn which are in a state of disrepair.
Liz Saville Roberts MP said:
I was pleased to meet with residents, business representatives and Councillors in Tywyn to hear directly about the increasing concerns about the condition of the promenade and the evident need to repair and strengthen the current sea defences on this important part of the Meirionnydd coastline. The promenade in front of Neptune Caravan Park is in a state of disrepair and as a result, there are barriers preventing easy access to the beach. Work was carried out in 2011 to strengthen the sea defences, however other parts of the seafront are now deteriorating rapidly resulting in crumbling and cracked concrete, compromised groyne structures and pieces of loose promenade stone strewn across the beach. Whilst the prime concern is for the safety of beachgoers and the worsening erosion, the situation is also having a detrimental impact on the local visitor economy and businesses are justifiably worried. The sea defences in Tywyn require a long-term solution not a short-term fix. I would appeal to Gwynedd Council to work with the local community and partner organisations to explore all options to develop a robust plan that will strengthen coastal defences in Tywyn to include fishtail groynes, reinforced sea walls and a beach re-nourishment strategy. It is vital that all steps are taken to protect the community from the ever-increasing threat of coastal erosion whilst preserving these sea defences for future generations.
