Maintain nursing bed provision on Pen Llŷn

We are calling on the Health Board and Welsh Government to ensure that we have nursing bed provision on Pen Llŷn

There are concerns about the future of Penrhos nursging home, following the news that the Polish Housing Society is intending to close the site by March 2021.

There are hopes that another organisation will take the site on, but doubts about the future of the nursing beds.

Penrhos has played an important part in the recent history of Pen Llŷn, and it's a nursing home for the people of Pen Llŷn.

There is no other nursing home on the peninsula, which means that people would have to travel to Cricieth, Porthmadog or further afield in order to have a place in another nursing home. There is a demand for nursing beds in Pen Llŷn.

It is the duty of the Health Board and Welsh Government to ensure that our needs are provided for. As the population gets older and our health needs more complex, the damend for nursing care increases.

We call on the Welsh Government and Health Board to work together and ensure that nurse bed provision continues here in Pen Llŷn.

The prospective new management company, Clwd Alyn, assured staff, residents and relatives, in a meeting held in February, that, with its experience in nursing home provision, It intended to rebuild the hospital on site as part of its take-over. Having been present at this meeting I am horrified to hear they intend instead to take over only on the provision that the hospital is shut down, making us realise that the company,s initial enthusiasm was obviously a tactic to gain control of a very desirable 9 acre sheltered housing site with no real intention of honouring neither the Polish community here or investing in the need for nursing care in the area. Now there is talk that only one meal per day is going to be provided for sheltered care home residents when most do not have the ability to prepare meals for themselves. How can we trust this company to provide for the needs of our loved ones? Welsh Government – please intervene. If we have learnt anything from the recent pandemic it is that quality nursing care is badly needed for the elderly. As the daughter of an elderly mother who is currently resident in sheltered accommodation on site with the prospect of moving to the nursing home when needed, I can vouch for the fact that the care here is exceptional and it would be a crisis to lose any part of it.

This is a much loved and valued care home which provides excellent care for our elderly residents and needs to be saved for future generations.
