HSBC: Safeguard Local Branches
Sign our open letter
Banking is one of the most basic and important services that people rely on. Banks have a social responsibility to serve our communities and are particularly important to the elderly and local businesses.
Yet over the last few years, communities across Dwyfor Meirionnydd have borne witness to the rapid collapse of local banking, with rural areas in particular suffering disproportionally.
Dwyfor Meirionnydd has lost 74.2% of its banking network since 2015 with only 8 bank branches now remaining. Wales has seen the closure of 380 local branches since 2015 with only 179 still open.
HSBC is now the last remaining bank in three of Dwyfor Meirionnydd’s most populous towns, namely Dolgellau, Bala, and Porthmadog. The other branches are in Caernarfon and Pwllheli.
Nothing can replace walking into a bank branch and talking to someone across the counter. Despite the myth being peddled by high street banks that everyone banks online, people still want that personal contact.
We therefore ask you to commit to safeguarding face-to-face banking services in Dwyfor Meirionnydd and maintain an over-the-counter branch presence in our communities.
