Plaid Cymru MP and MS help launch community shares campaign

Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, Liz Saville Roberts and Senedd Member, Mabon ap Gwynfor are backing a community share scheme to help secure the purchase of an iconic Pwllheli landmark for the benefit of the local community.  

Menter Y Tŵr are looking to raise a minimum of £400,000 to buy, redevelop and re-open Y Tŵr as a hotel, pub, restaurant and community hub. Y Tŵr is centrally located on Pwllheli high street and once served as a bustling hotel hosting many social events.

The local community and general public are being encouraged to invest and buy shares in the scheme to secure the purchase of the building. By becoming a shareholder, every member will have a say in how the community enterprise is run.

Liz Saville Roberts MP said:

‘Being part of running Y Tŵr as a community venture provides a unique opportunity for Pwllheli. Within a matter of hours of establishing Menter Y Tŵr, the Pwllheli community rallied together and raised £60,000 for the deposit.' 

'People are passionate about safeguarding this historic building as a centrepiece on the high street.' 

'Menter Y Tŵr have a positive and ambitious vision to develop the building into a thriving community hub, owned by the community, for the community.'

'If you’d like to be part of this exciting project and have a say in how the venture is run then you have until the middle of November to apply to become a shareholder.’

Treasurer of Menter y Tŵr, Councillor Elin Hywel said:

 'The community have a shared vision of prosperity which we know can be realised through the redevelopment of Gwesty y Tŵr as a platform for community and economic regeneration in our wonderfully town.'
