GWYNEDD COMMUNITIES DISPROPORTIONATELY IMPACTED BY BROADBAND NOTSPOTS

COVID PANDEMIC UNDERSCORES URGENCY TO FIX DIGITAL DIVIDE SAYS PLAID CYMRU

Plaid Cymru MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd Liz Saville Roberts says that figures identifying communities in Gwynedd as amongst the worst-served in the UK for access to superfast broadband, are a 'wakeup' call for both the UK and Welsh government who have failed to sufficiently redress the digital divide disproportionally affecting rural areas.   

The Plaid Cymru MP was responding to a report recently published by OFCOM, which shows that over 18% of households in Dwyfor Meirionnydd receive broadband speeds of less than 10Mb/s, the eligibility threshold set by the UK government for network upgrades. (Universal Service Obligation).

A Plaid Cymru Motion in Westminster calling on the UK Treasury to provide targeted support for hostels impacted by the fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic has secured widespread cross-party support.   

The Motion tabled by Liz Saville Roberts MP and sponsored by Hywel Williams MP calls on the Treasury to urgently put packages of support in place for the hostel sector, as figures from the Youth Hostel Association (YHA) reveal a £30m drop in income since March.

CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT SMALL BREWERIES FROM REGRESSIVE TAX HIKE REACHES WESTMINSTER.

Plaid MP says punitive government reforms could signal the end for many small independent brewers

Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Dwyfor Meirionnydd Liz Saville Roberts has accused the Chancellor of the Exchequer of blindsiding small, independent brewers in Wales, as the Westminster government push ahead with overhauling the way breweries are taxed.   

Under the contentious plans, dozens of small breweries across Wales face the burden of paying more tax because of a decision by the UK Treasury to cut Small Breweries’ Relief. Around 90 small breweries in Wales could be adversely impacted by the changes.

LOCAL MP CALLS FOR COVID-19 TESTING CENTRES IN DWYFOR AND MEIRIONNYDD

Health Board urged to consider specific needs of rural communities when determining Covid testing sites

Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament Liz Saville Roberts has called on Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to establish dedicated local community testing centres for people living in the Dwyfor and Meirionnydd area who present with symptoms of Covid-19.  

Whilst the Health Board has committed to opening a testing centre in Bangor, there remains no permanent provision for those living in Dwyfor and Meirionnydd, with the nearest alternative operational testing centres in Aberystwyth and Llandudno.

Time to legislate the use of jet skis similarly to legislation of motorcycles

Plaid Cymru Gwynedd will today call on the UK Government to create legislation to regulate offshore personal water vehicles, such as jet skis, in the same way as motorcycles are governed by road legislation.

“Does the population of Wales realise that Wales and countries within the United Kingdom are the only ones in Europe that allow jet ski users to drive along our waters without any form of restrictions?" asked Councillor Gareth Thomas who has responsibility for communities and economic development in Gwynedd.
